Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the safety of nuclear energy in Ukraine has been one of the focuses of the international media. In the country where the Chernoby nuclear disaster occurred, the nuclear contaminated area was indeed tense because of the Russian army.
On April 26, 2022, the 36th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, Yuri Bandazhevsky, a leading authority on the health effects of the Chernobyl disaster, held a press conference at the TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar, Ireland, to urge the world to help shelter the children of the Chernobyl contaminated zone.
Yuri Bandazhevsky, a former director of the Gomel Provincial Medical School in Belarus, was involved in the development of radiation protection standards in the old Soviet era, and after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, he and his team published numerous studies on the health hazards of the disaster, including pathological autopsies of those exposed to radiation. He was arrested and imprisoned in 1999, but was released in 2005 after advocacy by international human rights organizations.
Yuri Bandazhevsky is frequently interviewed by international media in connection with the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. For his outstanding research and contributions, he was awarded French citizenship (French nationality) by the French government and the "Freedom of the City" honor by 21 European Union cities (an honor bestowed by municipalities on prominent members of the community, visiting celebrities or nobility).
After the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Yuri Bandazhevsky was invited to speak around Japan to remind people of the dangers of nuclear contamination and nuclear food. His research influenced the city of Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan, to set a practical radiation tolerance standard of 0 becquerel for school lunch.
Here is a brief summary of his remarks at a press conference on April 26, 2022, the 36th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
"On this sad day, I invite you all for the unusual reason of being here. We, colleagues and I, who came from Ukraine, had to leave the country because of the Russian aggression.
However, what I am going to say today is not only about the invasion of Ukraine, but also about the health condition of the adults and children in Ukraine. They are suffering from the Russian occupation (in April 2022).
Why? Due to the Russian invasion near the nuclear power plant, the radiation dose in the area has increased dramatically. The nuclear lobby does not want people around the world to know about this, so they block information about people who have suffered from radiation.
People living in the Chernobyl area are in serious danger. For years, my colleagues and I have done research on the health of children here.
We have been conducting research in the outer part of the Chernobyl economic waters, in Ivankiv and Polesie areas, which are heavily contaminated with radioactive caesium and strontium. It is a very harmful place for human beings.
For example, if you eat blueberries there, you are consuming a high concentration of strontium. Furthermore, bringing firewood into your home is tantamount to bringing in highly contaminated radioactive strontium. It is not safe at all.
Nevertheless, because the alternative gas is very expensive and the locals do not have the money to buy it, people have to continue to use such firewood. After the flames burned, the concentration of strontium 90 and other radioactive species increased significantly. All this information is in our research records.
Moreover, there are many people in this area whose physiological functions are impaired by diseases. When radioactive species are ingested by humans, they can damage many organs.
Especially radioactive cesium is dangerous because it accumulates in children's bodies. Then I will explain the profound effects of free radiation.
Homocysteine, a type of amino acid, is one of the substances that can make or break a child's health. Here 50% of children are overweight.

This can lead to microthrombosis, cardiovascular disorders, heart disease, stroke, congenital disorders, neurological disorders, congenital malformations, mental disorders, 7 oncological disorders, and many other disorders."
