The first time I got be aware of the problem of radioactivity 
 The first time I got to be aware of the radiation problem was when I saw a photo exhibition of Iraqi babies in 1998. I couldn't stop crying when I saw how the radiological effects of radioactivity were actually taking place on many innocent babies. That was when I started to do volunteer translation/interpretation for social causes.  Furthermore, in 1999, I heard a lecture of a US scientist about dangers of nuclear power plants.  After learning about the dangers of a nuclear power plant in 1999 in relation to station blackout that actually took place in Fukushima, I went directly to the Fukui nuclear power plant workers to talk directly with them. I remember becoming speechless at their horrendous stories. I think it is necessary to learn the damage of Chernobyl in order to know the true damage of the Fukushima nuclear accident.  We need to read books on Chernobyl. Even so, the governments that are still promoting nuclear power and the international radiation protection agencies advertise that there is not much health damage below 100 mSv, and they still state, to my surprise, "The genetic effects of radiation have been proven in animals but not in human beings. " This word itself is amazing cover-up, which is totally unscientific.

Radiation is causing health damages in Eastern Japan 
In early June 2011, I received a letter from Dr. Shirotaro Hita, an A-bomb exposed doctor, saying, `` Many people in Tokyo already have symptoms that seem to be the effects of low-dose exposure (nosebleeds, diarrhea, lassitude, skin diseases such as erythema and purpura, thyroid gland swelling, etc.), adding Takenouchi's relocation to Okinawa is a right choice. "


 Actually, I was outside with my son when the radioactivity cloud was the highest on March 15, so I was sick for almost three months. In the case of myself and my son, I was completely exposed to internal radiation from the respiratory system, and my severe cold symptoms continued. I had a fever of 39 degrees Celsius for 8 days continuously, and my son had a fever of over 38 degrees more than 10 times. Cough and sputum lasted long (my son still has sputum almost once a day even after 9 years after the accident), and we became more susceptible to infections.

According to Dr. Hida, symptoms that seem to be low-dose exposure can be seen in the Kanto region and as far as Yamanashi and Shizuoka. In Fukushima prefecture, it is said that abnormalities such as cysts and lumps were found in 30% of children by thyroid echography of over 35% of minors. Atypical lymphocytes of infants have also been found in highly contaminated areas in Tokyo and Chiba.


Internal exposure can cause lasting health problems from the respiratory and digestive systems. For the future life and health of children, it is hoped that this problem should be addressed as soon as possible. I think this must be done not only among citizens, but also by the government and private companies. Below are the five important points I would like to raise today regarding internal exposure.

1. Underestimation of risk by confusing external exposure with internal exposure


Recently, hot spots in the environment have been focused, but as yet, hot spots in one’s body have not been recognized. In regard to this, Dr. Chris Basby, the Secretary-General of Science, of the European Commission on Radiation Risk (called ECRR, an organization in which independent researchers unrelated to the interests of the nuclear industry have ended from all over the world) expressed the danger of internal exposure using an exquisite metaphor. "The danger of internal exposure is the same principle that warming in front of a fireplace and putting a charcoal fire inside in one’s mouth.  They have a completely different effects on one’s body." Alpha rays and beta rays with a short travel distance are particularly dangerous. Because the travel distance is short, the surrounding cells are continuously affected. In addition to that, although not often mentioned in the media, it is also a fundamental problem that internal exposure cannot be accurately measured with Geiger counters and whole body counters.


2. The ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection) standards that the Japanese government relies on are problematic


I think many mothers are worried that the opinions of experts often appearing on TV and other media suspecting that they underestimate the radiation risks. In response to such a voice, the government side always says that it is reliable because it complies with the ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection) standards. The ICRP standard is used as if it says the truth and totally reliable. Is it really reliable, though?

3. There is damage to health even below 100mSV


Many experts claim that if it is 100 mSv or less, there is no health hazard, and that even pregnant women and children are okay. However, the phenomenon that the effect is increased by drawing a convex curve with low dose exposure is known as the "Petkau effect", currently widely recognized.  It is also known in the technical term "inverse dose rate effect", which has been listed in many studies abroad and there is a detailed description of my translated book "The Petkau Effect".

This isn't the only claim made by independent scientists. 4. The cesium standard in food too high in Japan

The German Radiation Protection Association ( has made the following recommendations:

Infants, children, and adolescents should be advised not to eat or drink foods containing more than 4 Bq / kg of cesium-137 per kg. Adults are advised not to consume foods and drinks containing more than 8 Bq / kg of cesium-137 per kg.

As for the management of food and drinks and the disclosure of measurement results in Japan, it is beneficial for civil society groups and funds to establish an independent radiation measurement station. 
You may hear that "German standards are too strict". That's not true. Dr. Babenco, Deputy Director of the Bellrad Institute, a private institute in Belarus, also stated in his speech in Japan that "children should aim for zero becquerels." 
 By the way, even if it is officially announced, if it is in the body of 15-20 Bq / kg, it is a dangerous for children. Similarly, for the residual amount of cesium, there is a graph published by the ICRP officially. Even if you take in only 10 becquerels a day, a child weighing 30 kg will reach a dangerous value of 600 becquerels (20 Bq / kg x 30 kg) within 100 days.
In addition, even if it is 1 Bq a day, even if it is taken for a long time, even adults will accumulate 180 Bq in the body. Children have smaller organs than adults, and when comparing adults with children who live in the same polluted area, it is clear from the results of pathological anatomy that children are more affected.

5. The toxicity of each nuclide is not mentioned


There is another decisive issue. The toxicity of individual nuclides is not mentioned. Here we will look at cesium and strontium.

The cesium 137 (half-life of 30 years), which is the hot topic now, first emits beta rays to become barium 137 (half-life of 2.5 minutes), and then becomes stable barium 137. The ratio of beta rays to gamma rays is 5 to 2, and internal exposure to beta rays is serious. By the way, the whole body counter measures only gamma rays.

Strontium-90 has a half-life of 29 years and emits beta rays to become yttrium-90 (90Y, 2.67 days), and yttrium-90 also beta-decays to zirconium-90 (90Zr). After one month, the radioactivity intensity of strontium-90 and yttrium-90 become equal. Beta rays from Sr90 travels 1 cm in water, and when ingested, some of it is excreted, but most of it is taken up by bones and the damage to the body is massive. Also, if it adheres to the skin, it may cause external exposure. Since it emits only beta rays, it cannot be measured by whole body counter.

A very important book on the toxicity of cesium was published in December 2011. This is "Medical and Biological Effects of Radioactive Cesium in the Human Body" by Professor Yuri Bandadevsky, the Former Rector of Gomel State Medical University.


With few studies of internal exposure to cesium in food, Dr. Bandadevsky conducted autopsies of patients who died at his university hospital and found that the cesium-137 had been accumulated in their hearts, kidneys, livers etc. By examining them, it was concluded that the exposure to cesium-137 incorporated in body was dangerous even at low doses. The points are summarized below.

体全体への影響Effects on whole body


* Chronic exposure of cesium-137 to body distorts cell development and other vital processes, causing disorders in internal organs (hearts, livers, kidneys).


* Often several organs are simultaneously poisoned by radiation, leading to metabolic dysfunction.


* Depending on the concentration of cesium, destruction of vital mechanism and cell protein are induced, while tissue development is inhibited.


* Pathological changes in body due to the effect of cesium show complications and are called Syndrome of Long-living Incorporated Radioisotopes (SLIR). SLIR appears when cesium enters the body and its effects correlates with the amount and time.


* SLIR is manifested by altered systemic function in endocrine, immune, reproductive, digestive, urinary, and bile systems.


* The amount of cesium that causes SLIR depends on age, sex, and the state of system function, but children with internal radioactivity levels of 50 Bq / kg or higher had considerable pathological changes in their organs and systems. Metabolic disorders in the myocardium were recorded at 20 Bq / kg. (In the paper of 2009, even 10 Bq / kg causes abnormality in the their hearts.)


* In both the contaminated and non-contaminated areas, even small amounts of cesium in the body have toxic effects on vital organs such as the hearts, livers and kidneys.
Effects on hearts


* Disturbances occur in many vital systems, the first of which is the cardiovascular system. Organs and tissues, such as myocardium, which have negligible or no cell proliferation, undergo the greatest damage on the metabolic processes and membrane cell tissues.


* Minsk children have a cesium-137 concentration of 20 Bq / kg or higher, and 85% have recorded ECG pathological changes. (In the paper of 2009, even 10 Bq / kg caused abnormality in their hearts.)


* Among children in Minsk, radioactivity in the body may rarely be detected, but still 25% of them had ECG changes. This low concentration is sufficient to cause significant metabolic changes in their heart muscles.

Effects on vascular system


* Vascular system is affected and hypertension may be present even in early childhood.


* Cesium reduces the antithrombotic activity of vessel walls.


* Pathological changes in the vascular system lead to the destruction of cells in brains, hearts, kidneys and other organs.


* Decreased white blood cell count was found among children with high cesium levels in the body. The first decrease was in bacillus nuclear neutrophils and monocytes, with an increase in the number of lymphocytes.


* Animal experiments resulted in a decrease in absolute red blood cell count and relative nuclear neutrophil white blood cell count.


* It is worth noting that the physiology of myeloid cells recovered from children migrating from areas of 40 Ci / km2 or more to less contaminated areas.

Effects on kidneys


* Cesium destroys renal function, causing toxic effects on other organs and arterial hypertension. 89% of sudden deaths in Gomel are associated with renal destruction.


* The kidneys are also strongly affected by cesium, and the radiation-induced kidney symptoms have certain characteristics. In addition, the disease progresses rapidly along with malignant arterial hypertension. After 2-3 years, kidney damage develops into chronic renal insufficiency, accompanied by brain and heart complications, and hypernitrogen mia.

Effects on Livers


* In livers, severe pathological processes such as fetal liver disease and cirrhosis emerge.


* Damage to the immune system increases viral hepatitis in contaminated areas, causing liver dysfunction and liver cancer.


Effects on Thyroid


* Cesium contributes to thyroid abnormalities in a synergistic relationship with iodine, causing autoimmune thyroiditis and thyroid cancer.

Effects on Mother and fetus


* Cesium can disrupt the endocrine function of the female reproductive system, which could be an important factor for infertility. It also causes hormonal upsets in both pregnant women and fetuses.


* Menstrual cycle disorders, uterine fibroids, and genital inflammation are also observed.


* Through breast milk, mothers become less contaminated, but the cesium contamination is transferred to the child. Many systems are made during this time, which adversely affects the child's body.


* In 1998, the mortality rate in Gomel reached 14%, but the birth rate was 9% (including stunted and birth defects). The fetal mortality rate during early pregnancy was quite high.


* Cesium causes liver disease in the fetus, in which case the fetus is not limited to the liver, but the metabolic disorder of entire body occurs.

* In animal studies, females in estrus have tissue damage due to neural reaction.


* Ukrainian scholars state that there is an abnormality of the limbic endoplasmic reticulum tissue in the left cerebral hemisphere.

Digestive system


* Cesium causes chronic gastrointestinal illness in children who have long-term cesium intake.

 About the toxicity of strontium

Strontium-90 was a substance once Rachel Carson called "evil buddy" along with toxic chemicals.  When the nuclear tests were being conducted, Sr90 was studied all over the world because of its harmfulness. It is a very dangerous substance and in this Fukushima accident, a considerable amount of Sr90 was detected even in Kanagawa prefecture below Tokyo as well. The toxicity of strontium is described below.

* Strontium tends to accumulate in the outer shell of milk and grains. (Both are basic foods, so they are badly affected. In 1963, Germany, considered the ban on distribution of brown bread due to the effects of nuclear tests)


* A bone-like substance similar to calcium that emits beta rays. Beta rays have a longer travel distance than alpha rays and reach the bone marrow more efficiently. Strontium 90 inhibits the normal function of white blood cells made in the bone marrow, and thus causes cancer, immunosuppression, infectious diseases due to immunosuppression, pneumonia, etc.

* In 1968, Stokke et al. Of Oslo University observed a high degree of damage to bone marrow cells in an animal experiment given strontium 90, even at only 0.01 milligray (millisievert).   1. 竹野内さんはじめまして。このレジメを読んで、ちらかっている私の頭がすっきりしました。竹野内さんのツイッターで、資料室がストロンチウムに言及しなかったことを今頃知りました。三丁目の交差点をはさんで、資料室と、電力の勝俣会長自宅が至近距離にあるのを観るといつも変な気持ちになっていましたので、御用なのだったら、とてもがっかりです。
