Health hazards of Fukushima family right after the accident郡山市出身のある方からの健康被害報告(UNSCEAR国連科学委員会と国連人権理事会に英訳提出済み)

Japanese text followed by English text, which had been submitted to UN Human Rights Council in 2012 November and UNSCEAR in June 2013.

Fukushima Accident and Health Problems Afterwards

A citizen from Kooriyama

On March 11 2011, I was in Kooriyama city in Fukushima prefecture.  When Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors exploded one after another, I was waiting in line for water distribution truck and wondered around the town searching for food.  All my neighbors, people in lines, food shop owners, my relatives did not know anything about these explosions.  Sometime afterwards, a rumor was heard.  “Seems like there has been some accident in the nuclear power plant.”  Before we knew what was going on, TV showed a group of riot police and Tokyo Fire Defense brigades spraying water on nuclear reactors to control the accident, and then we came to realize that there had even been some explosions.

When the explosions took place, all the three members of my family started to show some symptoms.  Swollen throat and pain, severe migraine, red eyes, diarrhea, nose bleeding, tense muscle, strong pain around heart with convulsion…all these symptoms occurred at one time.

When I heard of a news of the startup of a health consultation by the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency around March 26th, I made a phone call and asked about our familiy’s simultaneous symptoms.  Their answer was, “The throat pain is caused by some infection.  If all of your family members have throat pain, it should be some infection.  Go see a doctor fast and get a doctor’s medical certificate of some infections disease.”  They solely repeated, “some infectious disease” over and over, without listening to my story.  When I kept asking, their reply was, “The impact of health by radiation is only child thyroid cancer, which would emerge only 5 years after.  Nothing else would happen.”

Right after that, Professor Shunichi Yamashita from Nagasaki University came to Fukushima prefecture.  He became a radiation expert advisor and started lectures in Fukushima, Kooriyama and other places in Fukushima, saying, “Be aware of radiation in a right way.  Do not be mislead by demagogies and radiophobic peoples’ words.”  In the free tabloid newspaper, Fuji Sankei Living, distributed in each household, the headline banner said, “Be aware of radiation in a right way” along with the interview article by Professor Yamashita.

In the middle of April, I made a phone call to a telephone consultant at Fukushima prefecture.  He consoled me saying, “Please do not worry.  20mSV would not cause any health impact.  According to ICRP, even 100mSV would cause a very slight impact, which is only 0.5% rise in cancer incidence.  Please feel safe.  You can trust ICRP since it is an international organization that established international standards.” This person did not speak fluently and instead, he seemed lost for words many times and left the phone to ask for something for his boss, saying, “Hold on a second.”  While I was waiting, I could hear many phones ringing in the same room, and other prefectural staff members were answering them.  All of them were saying the same words, “Do not worry,” ”It’s OK,” “It’s safe.”

At that time, University professors, doctors from big hospitals were holding radiation seminars at public halls, township gathering places, and chamber of commerce office.

After all, our family evacuated to Tokyo.  Other people who stayed in the same evacuation place told me that they were told the same things when they called the Nuclear Agency.  In the gatherings of Fukushima evacuees in Tokyo, I talked with many people from various cities and towns, and many of them had some sort of bad physical conditions.  In case of adults, deterioration of their chronic diseases was by far the most observed ones, while children had nose bleeding, vomiting and diarrhea.  Sudden hospitalization, necessity of operation on chronic disease, mental instability and all sorts of things were heard.  Some people were diagnosed as Hashimoto thyroid disease.

However, when I asked evacuees from Miyagi and Iwate prefectures, I have never heard of these symptoms.

At the time of the accident, what we experienced were, abnormal chilling, irritation of face skin, soreness of throat, nose, and eyes, nose bleeding, red eyes, vomiting, stomach pains, extreme loss of appetite, gum bleeding, strong pain of heart with convulsion, migraine, erythema, back pain and whole body pain, and so on.

Sometime after the accident, we experienced sluggishness, rise of blood pressure, eye floater, nail deformation, headache, fatigue, nose bleeding, diarrhea, shaky hands, blisters on legs and arms, malaise, extreme forgetfulness, sharp rise of blood pressure, acute pain of left thigh area, muscle stiffness and cramp, heart pain, loss of hair, massive bleeding from cut, heart pain, muscle pain, central nervous system disorders.  Each single example seemed to be a minor trouble, but many of these symptoms came at one time.

All these symptoms were always attributed to stress triggered by the disaster.  There may have been some symptoms due to severe mental pains caused by many hardships from the nuclear accident.  However, there have been many symptoms that cannot be explained solely by mental stress, so I made some research.

Health records right after Chernobyl accident was kept secret by the Soviet Government for a long time.  In the secret documents, there were records of numerous number of people carried into hospitals due to physical abnormalities.  I also went through Belarusian and Ukranian reports 25 years after Chernobyl.  After I read these health problems, I came to realize that what was happening to ourselves was related to radiation.

At the end of 2011, I measured the internal radiation dose of our family by whole body counter, then the figures were nearly 50Bq/kg, which was in the range of caution.  I evacuated to Tokyo one and half months after the accident and since then, I went back and forth between Kooriyama and Tokyo.  My son always had nose bleeding whenever we went back to Kooriyama.

There are more than one million people still living in areas well over 1mSV/year such as in Kooriyama, Fukushima, Nihonmatsu, Date city.  I am very concerned about internal dose of children, pregnant woman and babies.

I also heard a story from a child rearing mother from Fukushima city.  She applied for three places for waiting list for whole body counter measurement. As a result, she was able to measure at two different places almost at the same time.  1st place was privately owned place and the 2nd place was a prefectural place. The figure was highest at the privately owned place and the second high was the city hospital, and there was not much difference between the first and second places.  But the prefectural place showed ND-Not Detectable.  Her friends also said their figures were ND at the prefectural place but they got some positive figures at the city hospital.

Among the aged, the cases of aggravated chronic disease, cognitive impairment, and sudden death is increasing.  Even among children, throat abnormalities and death that might be related to radiation is occurring.

Through our experiences, we predict that a grave situation would take place if people continue living in the contaminated areas any longer.  Doctors from IPPNW who visited Fukushima has the same opinion.  Mari Takenouchi, the translator of this document also escaped with her son.  Even though she was from Tokyo, both she and her son had health problems.

The government and the prefecture states that there will be no health problem up to 20mSV/year, but there are many people who are suffering from some health problems in various areas in Fukushima.  However, due to the social pressure under which people cannot speak out their thoughts, they have nowhere to appeal.

Every human being has the right to live.  I think it is an infringement of human rights if the government attributes people’s health problems solely to stress and give no proper health care and treatment.

I strongly believe that people in Fukushima, especially babies, children and pregnant women should be evacuated at the earliest possible timing from Fukushima.

Mr. President, please dispatch medical team to Syria instead of launching missiles

Mr. President Barack Obama

It was such a sorrow to hear the news about your intention to launch missiles to already devastated Syria.

If there are a number of people who have been suffering from chemical weapon's attack, launching missiles will obvisoulsy result in casualities.

If you target chemical weapon facilities, then the chemical agents could spread the surrounding areas, harming more people.  Accidental bombing would kill further people.  Bombing some infrastructure could paralyze the function of hospitals and distributing daily necessities.

Mr. President, please please do not make another mistake.

The use of Agent Orange by the US in Vietnam left millions of babies and children suffering from the effects even now.

The attack on Iraq created so much suffering among innocent people especially children including the effects of depleted uranium.

The attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki still sufferes many survivors including their 2nd and 3rd generation.

I think it is time for the US to look at the history straight and refrain from cruel actions against people in other nations, and instead truly helping general public, not aiming for profits through military-complex.

In the information age where everybody can have the access to the internet, so many people in the world can be watching what is really going on.

For the sake of the US, yourself and your wife, and your two beautiful daughters, please do not commit a crime against humanity.

Additional 4 kids suspected as thyroid cancer though they were not found any abnormality in the 1st round test.
Nikkei 2014/12/24 2:00

4 Fukushima children who were found no abnormality in their thyroid test after Fukushima Daiichi accident were found to have suspected thyroid cancer in the 2nd round of test started in April 2014.

This will be reported in the review committee in Fukushima city on Dec 25th.  Fukushima Medical University will hastely diagnose the suspected cases and will carefully determine whether the cancer was caused by radiation or not.

The subject of the test was 370,000 Fukushima children under 18 years old at the time of the accident and the second test will be conducted on 385000 children including those who were born one year after the accident.

Through ultrasonic echo machine, cysts/nodules size and form are checked and classified as A1, A2, B and C and children under the categories of B and C go through the 2nd test for blood test and biopsy.

According to the source, the additional 4 thyroid cancer suspected cases for the 2nd round of test were 6 to 17 years old at the time of the disaster.  The 4 children went through the 2nd round of primary test since April 2014 and were diagnosed as B.  As the result of 2nd test with biopsy, they were diagnosed as "suspected cancer."

In the 1st round of test, the number of thyroid cancer kids were increased from 57 to 84 and suspected case became 24.

I heard a very sad news today through Kyodo News Agency.  There have been 2 Fukushima thyroid cancer kids who got metastasis in their lungs.

I have been calling for evacuation of kids and pregnant women since right after Fukushima accident.

No matter how careful you are on what you would eat, nobody can stop breathing.  I myself had persistant coughing after March 15 radiation exposure in Tokyo and what I was afraid most was lung cancer.

I visited Fukushima just one day in autumn 2011.  That day, my spine got frozen by seeing  advertising posters of Women's Marathon Race in Fukushima.

After that, I got to know that even children's marathon races were being held in areas with doses equivalent to radiation control areas.

NHK, Japanese public TV station, never touches upon the thyroid cancer incidence in Fukushima (though they did in NHK international, they never did in domestic programs), and instead, keeps covering children's outside sport festivals and fruit-picking in Fukushima.

NHK shows programs which encourage residents in contaminated areas to go back their home town, and they never show this kind of serious issues.

Meanwhile, I was even criminally accused by a leader of ETHOS, a Fukushima NGO which encourages residents to keep living in their homeland, and have been threatened by countless internet obstructors.

I truly believe any government or media which ignores their own people's children's health/lives is insane.

http://takenouchimari.blogspot.jp/2014/08/pm-abe-tried-to-hid-donation-from-nhknhk.html

In addition, recently, Prime Minister Abe was criminally accused for covering up the political donation from NHK Chief Producer, but NHK has been ignoring this important scandal.

http://takenouchimari.blogspot.jp/2014/08/pm-abe-tried-to-hid-donation-from-nhknhk.html

I want these facts to be known among all the conscious citizens in the world.

From Kyodo News

On August 28 at the Japan Cancer Treatment Society, Professor Shinichi Suzuki from Fukushima Medical University reported concrete examples of children who have or suspected to have thyroid cancer throught the Fukushima prefectural thyroid examination after Fukushima Daiichi accident.

After explaining his perspective showing that the possibility of the nuclear accident influence is little, he stressed, "his treatment was in accordance with the standard."

The subjects of the thyroid examination is 370,000 children under 18 at the time of the accident in Fukushima prefecure.  The confirmed cases are 57 and suspected case are 46.  Compared to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident, Professor Suzuki said, "Both the symptoms and age distributions are different."

As for the 54 thyroid cancer patients who went through the surgery at Fukushima Medical University out of the 57 (translators; which means only 3 had surgery outside of Fukushima Medical University), more than 80% had cancer size larger than 10mm or metastsis to lymph nodes or other organs, which needed surgery.  2 had metastasis in their lungs.

The remaining 9 had cancer size less than 10 mm without any metastasis.  But according to Prof. Suzuki,  "7 had cancer adjacent to the resparatory tract and conducting surgery on them was right decisions."  The remainig 2 could wait for surgery by follow up observation, but they received the surgery based on the will of the patient and his/her families.

90% of the patients had their thyroid extracted only half.

As for the Fukushima thyroid cancer, some experts asked, "Weren't there any cases where no surgery was needed?" and the call for disclosing the patients' data was mounting.

On August 24th, Fukushima prefectural health survey meeting was held in Fukushima city, and it was reported that there are 103 thyroid cancer kids including the suspected cases.  There have been already 57 kids who already had surgery with confirmation of cancer.

As for the thyroid examination started in fall of 2011 by Fukushima prefecure, 80% of the 360,000 minors under 18 years old at the time of accident, the total of 296,000 have gone through the examination.

In Aizu area where the examination started last had 80% results of the secondary test.

And the total of 104 kids were diagnosed as malignant cancer or suspected cancer through the needling biopsy.

58 kids already went through the surgery and one was found to have benign nodule, but 55 had papillary carninoma and 2 had anaplastic cancer.

Fukushima medical university calculated the thyroid cancer rate in each region of Fukushima.  According to that, there are as many as 30 thyroid cancer kids in 100,000 in Fukushima as a whole.  There are 35.3 in Hamadori (coastal area close to Fukushima Daiichi) and 35.4 in Nakadori (central area in Fukushima) and 27.7 in Aizu (mountaneous area in the west).

According to the data in Nagasaki University which conducted screening test on thyroid cancer in contaminated areas in Chernobyl, there were 31 out of 100000 in Korosten in State of Zhytomyr and 22 in Kiev in Ukraine.

The result shows similar rate of that of contaminated areas in Chernobyl.

44 thyroid cancer and suspected cases among Fukushima children!
There was one child who went through surgery and found out to have a benign one, so the total number is 43.  Considering that only one out of 44 had a benign one, suspected cases are mostly considered as cancer cases.)

As of May 27, 2013, there were 27 cases and it was jumped to 44 in about 2 months.

14 cases in 2011 (5 boys and 9 girls) and 30 cases in 2012 (13 boys and 17 girls)

The youngest one was 6 year old.

The 44 was out of 17668, but considering that only 768 children out of 1167 went through the 2nd exam, in proportional calculation, there should be around 66 cases out of 176882, which is approximately 3.7 out of 10000 children.

This is quite a high rate already!

Secretary General of the United Nations
Today, there was a new announcement on Fukushima kid thyroid exam result from Fukushima prefecture.
Now there are already 44 cases of cancer and suspected cases, jumped from 27 compared to 2 months ago.
In rough calculation, it is approximately 3.7 out of 10,000.
Please take a look at this.
Quite shocking and sad...
However, government sided scholars are still insisting they could not say these are due to nuclear accident.
The source of information is as follows (Japanese)
http://www.pref.fukushima.jp/imu/kenkoukanri/250605siryou2.pdf and the chart I translated was on page 11.
Also, there was one child who went through a thyroid cancer surgery and was found to have a benign one, so considering that, total number of cancer and suspected ones are 43 all together.
As of now,
18 are confirmed and 25 suspected.
These suspected ones will go through surgery and considering that there was only one benign one ouf of 44, I suppose most of them would be confirmed as cancer in the end...
(Comparison between Gomeli and Fukushima)
11.3 thyroid cancer out of 100,000 in Gomeli 5 yrs after the accident
24.9 in Fukushima 2.5 yrs after the accident
(by journalist Kota Kinoshita)
Please help kids in Fukushima!

It was at the end of May that 27 thyroid cancer kids were found in Fukushima.
Already, almost two months have been passed, but amazingly almost no anti-nuke organizations are making any appeal on this most important issue!

Both in Japan and overseas!
Hey, what is actually going on!?

It is as if I was having a nightmare!

Please, anybody who has heart, there are already 27 thyroid cancer kids in Fukushima.  Please do disseminate this most important fact!

Some time ago, I made a phone call to Fukushima prefecture health examination section to place this most important data to more visible place (currently, unless one opens up 2 PDFs, we cannot see this table) and make the English translation, but they haven't done that yet, so here you can see them.
